$22 Broccoli

Yee Ma will remember the first day of New Years as the day she took only 1 cab and paid a whopping 22 bucks for broccoli. But let's back up...

In the morning, Carlos and I walked from Tiong Bahru to Clark Quay along the river and back again. Simba tricked her great aunt into thinking she would sleep the whole time. Instead with the parents gone, Simba decided a twenty minute nap would be enough! So then we all hopped in a cab to Indochine at the Asian Civilization Museum where Katie and Go joined us for lunch. We were lucky enough to catch parts of the Singapore Biennale and then headed back to Clark Quay for dinner.

All day, Carlos had been anticipating the expensive fried rice that had been promised. What we hadn't anticipated was the scams (we also hadn't anticipated Go saying he's not a big fan of fried rice--Carlos looked horrified when he found out :))! A lot of places have begun adding extra fees to everything just cause it's New Years. When we ordered the gai lan, without any mention of anything, the waitress brought American broccoli. It probably ended up being $1.50 per piece of broccoli! Yee Ma said we couldn't scold on New Years so we did what the table across from us did as we left the restaurant: we loudly noted "VERY DISAPPOINTED" to each other! We ended the night on a high note with some draft beer and spicy chicken wings next door. As we walked home from Clark Quay, Yee Ma, the Queen of cabs, exclaimed: "I can walk! We walked a lot today!" A fun and lively first new year day!

Back in the day, bird owners came to the old coffee shop in Tiong Bahru and hung their bird cages here

Carlos wouldn't smile. Yee Ma said pork. And then he smiled.

We love our manny!

This is Carlos's type of art. Actually made out of soap!

Inside the National Museum. Yee Ma making sure she's not seen by her colleagues.

We are engaged in serious discussions about how to bathe Simba at the National Museum
